You can download some rhythm accompaniment files. I use "The Amazing Slow Downer" software. And you can choose between several variations.Ģ. It even has a built in voice that will "count" ou time for you. I use both a metronome and computer softare -ġ.

But these are some pitfalls I've seen students fall into. You may be one of those beginners who has a good intuitive sense of rhythm, and music in general. I'm not saying these things will neccesarily apply in your case. Your brain has to initiate the hand motions milliseconds BEFORE you hear the click, so that when you do play the note, it's simultaneous with the click. Instead, you need to anticipate the beat. If you do that, you always be a little behind, and always be struggling unsuccessfully to catch up. Too often they're trying to RESPOND to the click. Then there's a mistake people sometimes make when practicing with a metronome. In short, you have to see the big picture before you can use the metronome to help you with the little picture. For example, if you unwittingly omit or add notes from a right-hand pattern-for example, playing seven or nine notes where there should be eight, as I've often seen students do-you'll end up a fraction of a beat away from where you should be, and the next time that metronome clicks, you'll be either ahead or behind, wondering what the heck happened. If you have that understanding, but just want to develop better musical precision, the metronome can be a very useful tool.īut if you haven't fully internalized the logic of music-especially rhythm and phrasing, and a sense of where the beat is supposed to be-trying to use a metronome will result in nothing but frustration. In order to use a metronome effectively, you have to understand basic musical timing, the beat, etc.

I don't have any musical experience, this is all new to me.
